Apple Macs are fantastic machines, but there’s one myth that keeps popping up:

🗣 “I hear they never go wrong!”

I hear this all the time clients taking advice from Mac enthusiasts and rushing out to buy one, thinking they’ve found the perfect, problem-free computer.

But here’s the truth: Macs can go wrong, just like any other device.

At their core, Macs are built with the same fundamental components as any other computer a motherboard, processor, RAM, storage, and an operating system. The difference lies in how macOS operates, but thinking a Mac is immune to issues can set you up for frustration down the line.

When Macs Do Go Wrong…

🛠 Specialized Repairs
Apple maintains tight control over who can repair their devices. Restrictions on parts and repair documentation make it difficult for independent technicians to fix Apple products.

Fewer technicians = fewer repair options, meaning you’re often forced to go directly to Apple or an authorized repair center, which can mean higher costs and longer waiting times.

Some recent real world experiences:

💾 Data Recovery Challenges
A client recently spilled wine 🍷 on their MacBook—making it uneconomical to repair. Normally, I’d remove the SSD to recover their data, but Apple’s default encryption locked us out without the encryption key. Because the key wasn’t stored in their cloud login, they lost everything.
Mac owners—take note! If you don’t have your encryption key saved, data recovery might not be possible when things go wrong.

🔑 Password Reset Frustrations
Another client forgot their Mac password. Simple fix, right?
Not exactly. Apple required a 48-hour waiting period before they could reset their account. That’s two full days without access to their files, apps, and work a major headache 😣.

Advice Before You Buy

Before buying a new computer, speak to someone who works with devices daily and understands the good, the bad, and the unexpected challenges. A Mac might be perfect for you but make sure you fully understand how it works, what support looks like, and what to expect if something goes wrong.

Final Thoughts Choose Wisely!

Technology is amazing when it runs smoothly, but when you depend on your device, reliable support is essential. Macs might have a reputation for flawless performance, but no computer is perfect especially when repair and recovery options are more limited than other systems. Make an informed decision. Know what you’re buying, and prepare for what happens when things don’t go as planned.
